The hot muggy Atlanta summer has finally arrived. So too, has the time for our summer holiday. This year we head to the north woods of Michigan. In search of cooler temperatures and the remote wilderness of ISLE ROYAL NATIONAL PARK. Located on the largest of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior, the park is one large island surrounded by about 400 small ones (called an archipelago). In 1980, the park was designated an international biosphere reserve, and the only way to reach the island is to cross the powerful Lake Superior by seaplane or boat.
You may ask, what calls our family to this isolated ecosystem? Perhaps it's the hope of seeing wild moose or wolf in their natural habitat, the visual feast of watching a sunset along a rocky shoreline, or the excitement of voyaging over the waters of the largest body of freshwater in the world. As Napier Shelton wrote, "to step into Isle Royale is to leave behind one's own self and one's own world and to begin a new exploration into the nature of life." Perhaps for us that is the lure of the north.
Nature awaits the Autry Family!
