Chicago or BUST!

  • So what does "or BUST" mean anyway? I've always wondered that.
  • Here we are approaching CHICAGO, the windy city. Although, while we were there it was the hot muggy city! Even moving towards Chicago at rush hour proved to be loads of traffic, partly because there are many toll stations. We had a little fun with those. John was driving and decided that exiting the toll booth was similar to exiting the pits in NASCAR! We were naming the other drivers in the lines around us and then beating them out of the pits after paying the toll.
  • Next you see a McDonald's smack dab in the middle of the interstate! No kidding!
  • Our first glimpse of Downtown
  • The Chicago White Sox Stadium, which I mistakingly called the "Cub Sox" and the rest of the family let out a roar!
  • A view of the Great Lake Michigan from our hotel room
  • A look at downtown from inside the hotel. A great place to stay - Embassy Suites Lakefront

Wow, very artsy shot of skyscrapers from your hotel room window! Great job; I am impressed.

I couldn't find anything online, although from what I remember in school "or Bust" originated from the time when Americans were settling from 'sea to shining sea.' Bust refers to a great failure. So to say "Chicago or Bust" means that you'll get to Chicago or fail utterly. It could also mean that the settlers would spend all of their financial means just getting out to the west and if they didn't succeed they'd be bust or bankrupt. Or worse really. I could be twisting that around, but that's what I always thought it meant.

I think I've decided I'd like to visit Chicago, thanks to your pictures. It looks like... a big city, but not THE big city here in NY. I have a friend that lived there for five years or so. That shot out of your window is amazing. What a great sight to see. How many floors up where you?

On the major tollway here in NY they have these 'rest areas' every thirty miles. I don't really know what else to call them. They usually have two restaurants in them, a big dining area, a souvenir shop, a big clean bathroom and lots and lots of vending machines. It's a nice thing to be able to depend on. But not very healthy by any means. They should have subway at least. It's usually a Burger King or a McDonald's.

Our room shot was 15 floors up, but the buildings shot was 2nd floor.

I guess Odessa DOES have good schools! In the case of the "or BUST"...I believe I did use it in the right context, considering we DID spend just about all of our financial resources while we were there! Ha-Ha!
